Cool Printing Tools
This may not be news to some, but it is to me. I discovered a couple of cool printing tools today thanks to Scott Hanselman's blog. The first tool is FinePrint.
This virtual printing tool sits between your source and the printer of your choice, captures the output and lets you manipulate it in many different ways.
- Print 1, 2, 4, 8 up or in booklet form.
- Change margins.
- Print to the clipboard.
- Build custom watermarks and letterhead
- And much more.
I've tested this out with the OneNote Imagewriter, Journal, and Gobinder printers and it works well in all three cases.
What it doesn't do:
- Output of ink to paper through FinePrint looks a little more jagged than directly from the source.
- It doesn't get rid of that pesky printing problem of unruly web pages that cut off the right margin.
But, reading the comments on Scott's site, I discovered Fitted Width Printing. This is an Active X control that allows you to print that entire web page. It works well with FinePrint.
Of course, it would be great if all of this was native to Windows, don't ya think? But since it is not, this gives you a bit more control. I know it will cut down on paper as there are many in house documents I can 2, 4, or 8 up. The same should be true for things I gather and print to OneNote.
