So, just wondering, how many more rootkits installed by otherwise trusted sources are out there? This article in PCWorld and this one in eWeek talk about Mark Russinovich's discovery that Symantec and Kaspersky, both major security vendors, have products that install rootkits on your computer without your knowledge.
Both companies state and protest that the behavior is different from the Sony Rootkit fiasco, although Symantec has already posted a patch to remove the offending malware. While there are differences in both the intent and usage of these rootkits, the problematic questions remain.
Brian Krebs of Security Fix also has more on this.
