Google and the Androids

So, Google announced what it is doing with Android and its creation of the Open Handset Alliance. No Google Phone but instead partnerships with everybody except Microsoft, Apple, Verizon, Nokia, AT&T, and a few others in the mobile phone biz.

The news if there is any is that Google is forging ahead with its plans for an open platform for mobile devices, before and as it moves forward with the FCC auction of the 700Mhz spectrum. You remember that, they want open platforms and open access.

There is still a long way before this turns into something real, but this is the second big announcement without any meat on the tablet from Google in two weeks. Are they getting out front? Don't know. But they sure are making folks nervous with statements like "it is important to recognize that the Open Handset Alliance and Android have the potential to be major changes from the status quo..."

I'd like to see it come to be, but as I said earlier, the jury is still out. So are the androids.
