The Great Reviews Keep On Coming In For Smoke on the Mountain

Two more great reviews for Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming at Wayside Theatre. The Winchester Star calls it a "must see" and the Northern Virginia Daily says it is "first-rate and "hilarious." I'm biased of course, but this is a great show and well worth the trip. The musicianship is superb, the acting equally so, and if you're looking to chase away a winter chill, this will do the trick. If you're in the area come check us out.

Here's the link to the Winchester Star Review. (The Daily doesn't post this on line.) Will wonders never cease, my good friend (and member of the cast) tells me the NVD does now post this on-line. Here's the link.

A New Definition of Torture

I didn’t get a chance to see much of the Senate hearings featuring Attorney General Mukasey due to a busy day. But from the glimpses I’ve seen, I would say we have a new definition of torture. It is watching Mukasey twist and turn and try to avoid defining waterboarding as torture.

What purpose does this guy think he is serving, and how can he live with himself? I mean there is legally speaking and then there is bullshit.

There are a number of videos on TPM Muckraker if you can withstand the torture.

That Old Sky Is Falling Thing

Disney-Chicken-Little-Sky-Falling As we get closer to the time of reentry, news keeps getting more and more interesting on that US spy satellite that is going to lose the battle with gravity and crash to Earth. Apparently there is a good chance pieces of it will hit the US or somewhere in North America.

You have to love this quote from the head of US Northern Command. On whether or not there might be a security issue if some of the technology falls into the wrong hands he said:

"It's really just a big thing falling on the ground that we want to make sure we're prepared for."

Cheeseburger In A Can?

Oh, my. I'm voting no on trying this out. Cheeseburger in a can? I guess if I was really hungry or really drunk.

Following the Silly Season of Politics on the Web

The Silly Season is what my father used to call the presidential race and that was before we had wall to wall coverage and things were still by and large decided in back rooms. This particular Silly Season is getting pretty hot and serious at the moment as it looks like some things might get decided in the next 10 days or so as to who the respective nominees might be.

I've always been a political junkie for some reason and love the ebbs and flows, comedy and drama, (occasionally melodrama), and zaniness that goes on. This year I'm enjoying following much more of it on the web, reading and listening to folks who I respect (and some I don't) about their opinions. Most of those I'm enjoying reading or listening to are no way of the usual talking head persuasion but geek bloggers. Of course there are those who say that geeks and techies should keep their mouth shut, but then those are the same folks who get upset when a theatre guy chimes in with his thoughts as well. I play in both world's so I catch it all the time. To those I say simply, guess you don't get the whole democracy, constitution thing and need to go back to Civics 101.

At any rate, some of the fun I'm following is the NewsGang, which has now moved to a daily show, with call-ins from listeners (I may just do that if I can find the time to do so). I'm also pleased to see Mike Arrington and the TechCrunch gang get out front, conduct some interviews, conduct some polling and offer a TechCrunch endorsement for each party. I also really enjoyed this post by Michael Parkeh on recent events. But then I always enjoy Michael's thoughts and don't see why his political thoughts should be any different. I also really enjoy watching or listening to a debate and following the commentary on Twitter. And lastly, I enjoy reading and following Dave Winer on this as well.

I know there is great hope that the Internet can be a positive force for change in the political landscape. I remain skeptical about the positive part of that. In fact, if you follow any of my rantings here at all you know I remain pretty skeptical of the entire charade of politics.

And if you're wondering, I still think all the candidates still in the race have some things to prove. The Clintons are pissing me off almost daily. Obama one minute gets me going and the next leaves me cold. If there is hope of change, I think he is it, but he needs to pull it all together and quickly. On the Republican side, I'd like to see McCain take the nomination, but I have a feeling the economy is going to usher Romney in.

In reality, I'd love to see, and I think the country deserves, two brokered conventions so we could hopefully expose the entire game.

Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming is a Hit

smokeonthemountain The first review is in for Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming, that just opened Sunday night, and it is a rave. David Woods in The Main ARTery Magazine says the performances are wonderful, the music delightful, and he's planning on coming back for a second trip!

Here's a brief quote:

On moving to West Virginia 15 years ago, one hope was visiting weekly bluegrass bands at places like Luckett’s in Virginia. Now, I can drive a bit further to Wayside & hear different, but equally appealing, music -- plus both touching & hilarious dramatic moments. Visit Wayside’s Royal Phoenix soon. You won’t regret it!

(I'd link to the review but it isn't published yet, as we just got an email heads up and in fact, I'm not sure they have an on-line presence.)

Hopefully this is the first of many such raves.

gapingvoid and the RIAA: Brilliant

Hugh MacLeod's cartoons are usually brilliant observations. Some are more brilliant than others. This one nails it.

Fire Starting Flashlight?

Yikes! I'm not sure this is a good idea. A flash light with a beam that will start a fire seems quite dangerous to me.

Thanks to Sumocat for the heads up on this.

Shel Israel and Scoble Team Up at Fast Company

This should be more than interesting to follow. Shel Israel is teaming up with his Naked Conversations pal, Robert Scoble, at the latter's new gig, Fast Company.

My show will be called GlobalNeighbourhoods TV (GNTV). I'll be covering social media's impact on culture and business. I hope to speak with people from all over the world, people in start ups and in the enterprise, people who are changing the world or are being changed by what is happening. While my primary focus will be business, I'll also look at government, academia, education, youth and assorted institutions.

One thing for sure, it will be fascinating to see what comes from this. My eyes are peeled.
