I’ve been waiting to see some explanation about the wooden arrow provision attached to the bailout bill, and now we have the beginnings of one from the Oregon News. This wooden arrow thing, (along with other things like Rum producers and race tracks) drew quite a bit of fire when word got out that it was added to the bill as a sweetener. The owner of Rose City Archery, Jerry Dishion, apparently has felt like he’s been under siege in a covered wagon ever since.
Dishion says it isn’t a tax break but a tax repeal that fixed an existing mistake. Apparently the mistake led to a 43-cent tax on a 30-cent arrow shaft led to problems selling them to organizations using them to train kids in archery. Apparently, after the problem manifested the company went from selling 1 million arrow shafts a year to 100,000. The tax generated about $1 million annually.
On the surface, it sounds like some relief was due there, but I’m guessing this one is going to sting for awhile.
Timing is everything. Especially when you’re dodging arrows with a big target on your back.
