We kick off rehearsals today for Robert E. Lee and John Brown: Lighting the Fuse at Wayside Theatre. I'm looking forwarding to revisiting this story that we originally mounted in 2004. Yes, it's about John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry, and Robert E. Lee putting down the raid. Yes, it's about the evils of slavery. But as I've been working on the script in preparation for kicking things off, I'm rediscovering just how much this play is about how man can delude himself into thinking his motivations and his actions are right, especially when one is dealing with the extreme.
After Facebook acquired Friendfeed today, some Friendfeed users are bemoaning the fact, some are excited about what the acquisition means, and some are angry. Par for the course I guess when something like this happens. As far as I’m concerned, what Friendfeed turns into or if it just gets shut down isn’t really a concern. Anyone banking on any of these services to be around for a long period of time should be banking on something else. That said, I do enjoy Friendfeed as a service and will miss it if it disappears, which I think is more than likely. Who knows what will happen here and while emotions are flaring, it is too early to know what will come of this.
But that’s not what this post is about. Good friend, Newsganger, and ace blogger, Francine Hardaway made this comment in a Friendfeed post about those who were upset by the deal.
The Fandango iPhone app used to be a handy go-to way of purchasing movie tickets for me. The last two times I've attempted to use it though, it seems like something has changed. The early afternoon shows will be available for sale, but evening shows will not. If you go to the Fandango website, you can purchase tickets for all shows, which is where my confusion lies. Is this some sort of iPhone app bug, or is Fandango purposefully not letting evening shows be listed for sale on the iPhone app? If so, I can't imagine why. Oh, well.
Take it for what it’s worth. Frank Schaeffer helped weave the Christian Right into our political life, then had a Lee Atwater-like change of heart once things got out of control. Here he talks about how we are damaging our political and social fabric.
This story is recycling again after it came up during the last administration. Politicians and scientists may debate whether or not climate change is real, but the military is preparing for climate change as a threat to national security.
Apple goofs again. And again. And again. Sorry. Broken record there. This one is about Boobs. No dictionaries this time. Just boobs. Apple has reached a tipping point where they fortunes are starting to decline. This happens to boobs. It’s called gravity.
Death Panels. Give me a break. The only thing ‘downright evil’ going on right now is the ginning up of crap and the smearing of this country with the stink of it. On both sides. If we are ever going to create Death Panels in this country let’s create one for those who think so little of the American people that they use and abuse the power of language to advance their agendas. And we call them leaders and give them air time. We not they.
Let’s also create a Death Panel for the media heads who insist on pushing the controversy and not the issues. I think the newspaper or the TV outlet that decided not to play the Rupert Murdoch sensationalism game and instead devote their coverage to pointing out when the players make idiotic and false statements would probably see their fate turn around. Actually we don’t need to create a Death Panel in this case. The media moguls have already created their own path to extinction.
And one more Death Panel. Again, for both sides of the screaming. Any parent that fills their child’s ears with the garbage and the vitriol that is being tossed around by both sides needs to be brought up short. You may win your fight today, but you are dooming your progeny to a disturbing hell tomorrow.
For those who think I’m overreacting here and that this is all political speech and that we should let it run its course I have this to say. Do not demean the words ‘political’ and ‘speech’ so. Do not demean what is left of your own intelligence so. Our political discourse has been reduced to the braying of a pack of wild dogs while they tear at each other for the leavings in a garbage can. For those who say they want their country back. Start with yourself and take some of your own dignity back first. Otherwise, quit sucking the oxygen out of the atmosphere.
