Tasteless Comment by Huckabee

UPI guess there's no mistaking who the Republicans think is going to be the Dem nominee, but making jokes about pointing a gun at Barack Obama at an NRA meeting? Tasteless.

UPDATE: Interesting. The content was pulled on this. I'm sure it will be back up or from another source soon.

Appeasement Part Deux

So, the country we've been appeasing for several presidential administrations now, including the present one, just stuck its thumb in George's Bush's eye when he went begging for some more oil production. Giving lie, once again, to the silly oil speculator myth, that rising prices are about supply and demand, the King of Saudi Arabia says that he sees no increased calls for demand from his customers.

You have to love how all of these chickens are coming home to roost on George Bush's shoulders. Only problem is we're paying for the damn chicken feed.

Maybe George Bush knows what appeasement really is now.

Via the AP.

UPDATE: Turns out Saudi Arabia had a change of heart. They are increasing production in June by 300,000 barrels a day. Sounds like a lot of appeasing going on somewhere.

Terry McAuliffe Highlight Reel

Well, depending on your perspective this may be a lowlight reel, but hey, to each his own. Terry McAuliffe is nothing if not on message and enthusiastic about it. So much so that you won't really need to watch this entire video, unless you want to see a study in over the top. I'm not sure if McAuliffe, who some say has become the Baghdad Bob of the Presidential Follies, will ever want to revisit any of this, but I can see this video (put together by the TalkingPoints Memo gang) being used in political science classes for years. Heck, I can see it being used in classes on self parody for years.

Thanks to @Mickeleh on Twitter for the link.

Inflation News Makes No Sense

I've certainly never been one to trust figures put out by the government on any number of topics, but this morning's news that Inflation pressures eased during the month of April made me think I was living in an alternative universe.

If you go read this article I'm sure you'll scratch your head the same way. While, as the article says, all sorts of accounting methodology goes into these kind of things, I don't think it serves any purpose to say inflation wasn't as bad last month when the same report says basic necessities like gasoline and food stuffs continued to rise. In fact as the subhead of the article screams this has been the biggest jump in food prices in 18 years.

Funny math. Not so funny over the dinner table.

Ex-Candidate?

Dana Milbank of the Washington Post has a pretty devastating (to Clinton supporters) article in the Washington Post called This is an Ex-Candidate. Playing off an old Monty Python skit, he also glimpses inside the campaign a bit and offers what I would think has to be a pretty depressing look at things. Worth a read.

Some Religiosity Regurgitations

So, one of the many thorns in John McCain's side, the Reverend Hagee, has apologized to Catholics for calling the Catholic Church 'the great whore' and 'the apostate church.'  Guess he is still hoping for an invite to the White House if McCain gets elected.

This happens on the same day that a letter from Albert Einstein goes up for auction. The letter basically describes religion belief in God as 'childish superstition' and says Jews aren't the chosen people.

I'm sure both will lead to some tortured posturing from folks on all sides of these kind of issue, all of which will lead to nothing in the end. A lot of folks have been debating some of Einstein's previous musings on religion for years ('science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind' as an example) and fall all over themselves doing so. Those who will choose to argue that this proves Einstein didn't believe in religion will have a field day with this.

Unfortunately, as far as the Reverend Hagee is concerned, this will just be seen as yet another blatant attempt at hypocrisy by some, and as sudden absolution from others.

At least Einstein's thoughts had something of substance behind them, however you feel about them. Hagee's should be an insult to anyone. Both his original comments and his apology.

Bob Barr Jumps Into The Presidential Follies as a Libertarian

Just when things looked like the might settle down.  Former Republican Bob Barr jumped into the Presidential Follies, running as a Libertarian. I'm not sure if this will take the center ring for more than a few pratfalls, or just be a perpetual side show. But it should be entertaining to say the least as the speculation will be how many votes he'll take from McCain.

That Old Happy Birthday Copyright Thing

TechDirt digs up some of the best stuff on the ongoing saga of Intellectual Property and copyright issues. One of the wackiest stories in the IP struggles surrounds the copyright on the song, "Happy Birthday." TechDirt links to a great paper by Robert Brauneis that calls the original copyright into question. Apparently the original owners may have composed the original melody by it looks like they didn't pen the lyrics. There's even evidence that the melody wasn't original. By the way, did you know that the copyright on this song generates over $2 million a year and accounts for over 1% of the money that ASCAP distributes to songwriters. Fascinating.

Don't Watch This If You're Easily Offended or a Clinton Supporter

Oh. My. Goodness. There is so much wrong about this, and yet, there is so much funny about this, and I'm afraid there is probably a smidgen of truth as well. Foul language galore, so you've been warned.

Political Ringtones

Though slanted a bit towards Obama in content, you can have a ringtone from Hillary, McCain, or Obama on your phone courtesy of Slate. Choose Obama's Yes We Can, or McCain's "little jerk" comment, or if you really have an annoying friend who's calls set you off, you can choose Hillary's laugh, or her saying "shame on you Barack Obama."

Don't have too much fun with these.
