NOAA Starts Twittering

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has started Twittering so folks can follow developments with hurricane Gustav. You can follow NOAA here. It looks like this happened overnight as there aren’t that many followers yet, but I would imagine in the future this will become a valuable tool during these kinds of events.

Sunday Morning Reading

borg76 Some Sunday morning reading to share.

Intersections: Twitter, Track, and CNN. Karoli nails so much of the recent overlapping debates about Twitter, track, politics, and media, that you’ll probably need to read this a couple of times.

Speaking of Twitter, Brian Carter on the Inquisitor looks at Why Twitter Is The Only Thing That Can Save The World from the Top 10 Causes of Destroyed Worlds. Very, very, funny.

Coming out of IDF this week, Intel began predicting that humans and machines will begin to merge in 2050. Hope I’m not around for that.

Martin Marty looks at Using God Politically. Good piece, too bad most who do, miss his points.

Michael Parekh wants more info from the presidential candidates on their tax and spend policies. So do I. Will we get it. Not without digging. There’s too much to gain (and lose) by staying away from substance.

Peggy Noonan says that folks are now starting to pay attention to the Presidential Follies, and thinks McCain should make a one term pledge. She’s right folks are staring to pay attention, and she’s wrong. McCain doesn’t need to make a one term pledge. Those paying attention have already figured out he would be a one-termer. That’s part of his appeal.

Biden is the Dem’s VP selection. CNet looks at his record on technology issues. Not a great record.

Waiting on line as a profession? Interesting.

Very Funny Twitter Parody

CrunchGear’s Nicholas Deleon came up with this very, very, very funny parody about Twitter’s ups and downs called The Rise and Fall of Twitter.

Sunday Morning Reading

Some Sunday morning reading to share.

monataukmonster The Monatauk Monster. Interesting picture. Interesting premise. Bizarre outcome.

Steve Gillmor is wondering what will happen with Silverlight now that the Olympics are just around the corner. So am I.

Interesting economic and Big Oil news this week. If you want to know what’s wrong, all you have to do is read the news.

Someone pretended they were Exxon on Twitter this week. Now the question is how should companies react. The honchos at Exxon were probably happy to not have to deal with angry customers.

The case of the Anthrax scientist that committed suicide is one of the strangest stories I have ever read. I think there is much more than we know here, but have no idea what.

Sunday Morning Reading

Some Sunday morning reading to share.

newton Wired wonders, Has Apple bitten off more than it can chew? Methinks it might have, but only in the inevitable sense that getting bigger and attracting more users to more products has the same effect as gravity.

The New York Times wonders about the differences between reading online and reading a book. Declining reading scores? Linear attention in a non-linear world? Cognitive enrichment? Loss of print subscribers? Fascinating discussion. I’m reading this article on an iPod Touch.

Last week Scoble told us why tech blogging has failed us and promised to blog  more about things that are practical and useful and less about business. This week he’s offering condoms to protect against Silicon Valley Disease.

Steve Gillmor on what’s coming. He’s always writing about what’s coming, usually before anyone else knows it’s coming. Fake Steve Gillmor is trying hard but parodying himself more than the original.

Frank Rich on How Obama became acting president. He leaves out the part where our current lame duck forgot how to waddle, much less lead.

Islamist militants threaten the Olympics with suicide bombers and bio weapons. They’re pissed because suicide bombing was not allowed as a medal sport this year.

Michael Parekh on Art Like Twitter and history repeating. Watch the video. Yes.

Sunday Nights Can Sure Be Interesting

Well, well, well. Loic Le Meur is up to something and I think we’ll all benefit in the end. Twhirl has now added Identi.ca support, but much more than that. Using XMPP, it appears we’ll be able to get closer to real time updates (Track). This is a good thing. Rafe Needleman broke the news and has the how to and the link available. Steve Gillmor lays it out with this preface:

Something just happened and I think it may be important.

I think he’s right.

Is The Twitter Train Leaving The Station?

Been busy this week so I haven't been following Twitter's ups and downs but just paying attention to it is sort of a peripheral way. But it looks like this might have been the week where the exodus started to pick up steam, given that the Twitter folks decided to disable the reply tab in order to keep the service running. Almost like removing the steering wheel in order to keep the car on the road, if you ask me. I notice quite a number of folks are moving to Friendfeed, or at least becoming more active there. Intriguingly they are twittering that they are doing so and asking, on Twitter, their Twitter followers to join them there, which creates an interesting round about.

For what it is worth, you can find me on Friendfeed here.

Now That’s High Tech

So, Seesmic has now added video capability to Twhirl. Loic Le Meur tells us about it in a Seesmic video (natch) but since Seesmic can’t do url’s just yet, you have to watch Loic’s high tech approach to giving us the url. Absolutely hysterical.

Sunday Morning Reading

Ok, so it is more like Sunday afternoon, but what the heck.

Peggy Noonan talks about Old America vs New America. She mostly gets it correct if you’re looking at it through the prism of Old America. But I think she gets her math wrong in the end.

Steve Gillmor’s Our Home Town. Russert, Twitter, and all that’s in between. He gets the Old America vs New America better than Peggy Noonan.

Lots of talk about capping and throttling broadband coverage this week from the folks who own the pipes. Google is talking about making a tool so that you can see who’s putting the brakes on.

Some think that Virginia is going to be competitive in the Presidential Sweepstakes. I do too.

There was a big dustup this week about the AP clamping down on the Drudge Retort for quoting AP stories. The AP doesn’t want them to do so, which is not only silly, it is stupid. Jeff Jarvis proposes a link ethic that the AP and everyone should follow. Yeah, like that will happen.

A nice look back at the late Tim Russert in The New Yorker.

The TimesOnLine says Bush wants to get Bin Laden before he leaves office. Oh, now the pressure is on.

I keep reading that vinyl is coming back, as in LPs for music. Not seeing anything about turntables though.

James Kendrick’s Goodbye to a great man. I enjoy reading this every Father’s Day.

Twitter Is Dead: Congress Starts To Use It

This is a sure sign that Twitter is on its last legs. Jason Linkins reports in the Huffington Post that members of Congress have started using it. Not only that they are using it to do participate in their favorite sport, partisan bickering.
