I'm not going to say I told you so just yet.
In September the blogosphere and the news media was talking about Steve Jobs taking on Warner Brothers and the recording industry because they wanted to see a different and higher pricing structure for their content sold on iTunes. I blogged then, and still believe today that Jobs' protestations were designed to deflect the outcry away from Apple for what he knows is coming.
Today, Michael Parekh points to a Wall Street Journal article that seems to indicate that this indeed might be coming down the pike.
"Music company EMI Group PLC said it expected Apple Computer Inc. to increase the price of popular songs and cut those by unknown acts on its iTunes Web site within a year."
Like Michael, I'm not optimistic that the ongoing Song BMG DRM fiasco will make any of the music/media folks take notice. If this price increase comes to be, it will be too bad and too sad.
The way things are looking these days we'll probably end up paying more per song, plus listening to an ad before it plays.
UPDATE: Forbes has more on this here.
