Things took a turn for the worse for BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) today when the Supreme Court rejected RIM's appeal in the ongoing patent dispute. This clears the way for the original trial judge to issue an injunction that could block Blackberry use in the US. The fight is far from over, and with this much at stake, I'm betting some sort of settlement will be reached.
Intriguingly the Supremes had been asked by RIM to decide if US Patent law was technologically out of date given the pace of change in the Internet age.
I think there are more than a few issues floating about that could raise similar questions about similar laws. Can you say copyright?
