Looks like the US Government is stepping up in favor of Apple regarding the French parliament passing a law that would force Apple (Microsoft, Sony, et al) to open up their DRM schemes. Commerce Secretary Carlos Guiterrez gave backing to Apple today saying
"...any time something like this happens, any time that we believe that intellectual property rights are being violated, we need to speak up and in this case, the company is taking the initiative."
Guess Uncle Sam likes hearing Apple call the French law "state-sponsored piracy."
And Kevin Maney of USA Today notices a new patent for location based licensing that was just issued that will probably enter into this fray very quickly. Looks like that patent went to Microsoft.
