Some Sunday morning reading and viewing to share on Memorial Day Weekend.
Rabbi Marc Gellman's Memorial Day meditations. Read to the end of the article and the lyrics of Nella Sweet's 1867 Hymn Kneel Where Our Loves Are Sleeping. Perspective.
More perspective from Jon Meacham of Newsweek. Another meditation on Memorial Day, sacrifice and some history.
And if your tastes swing more to viewing, I highly recommend watching A&E's documentary, Combat Diary: The Marines of Lima Company. Video from the soldiers themselves. Nicely done and harrowing. Set that DVR.
And then there's this humorous video cobbled together of George Bush and Tony Blair affirming their...er...um... friendship. Too funny.
Moving on to other topics here's another bit of historical perspective on the Speech and Debate clause that is in the news concerning the William Jefferson scandal. Anyone but a lawyer or something to protect reading this would see it doesn't apply.
The Immigration Debate is still red hot and will continue to be, in my opinion. How could it not, when the skills it takes to be a leader these days don't involve actually making hard choices, but instead crafting legislation that is meaningless, dangerous, and foolish. David Broder has a good article on this in The Washington Post. And of course the White House Snowjob that illegal immigration is comparable to a traffic ticket points up the pickle barrel we now find ourselves in. Those we honor for their sacrifice this weekend gave their life for this?
And cooling off a bit and just for fun, how about some pictures of squirrels taking pictures of squirrels courtesy of a link from The PigPog Blog. Fun.
