You knew it was going to happen sooner rather than later. Looks like the Edinburgh Fringe Theatre Festival will see the debut of Bloggers, Real Interent Diaries, a play created out of a range of blog entries.
In bedrooms, boardrooms and cafes, Britain’s bloggers pour out their hearts on-line. Thousands of new blogs are created every day. Most aren't worth your attention. These are… An agoraphobic sex chat-line operator. A nymphomaniac mum of two. A predatory queen… Writer-director Oliver Mann has sifted through hundreds of blogs to compile the most darkly comic, engaging personal diaries into a rapidly-paced play. Like other hit ‘verbatim theatre’ shows (The Vagina Monologues, The Exonerated, My Name Is Rachel Corrie), all the material used to in the play is 100% real… You never really know someone until you've seen their diary.
Blogs are a perfect vehicle to discover this sort of Reality Theatre approach from, and I've actually toyed around with a few concepts about this myself. While it appears that the bloggers have all given permission for their blogging to be included, I'm sure if this hits big-time it could raise some intriguing copyright issues down the road, and of course, the first foray would feature blogs that titillate and tease a bit. Hey, that's what sells.
Anyway, it will be interesting to follow the journey of this.
