Dell has been getting kudos for taking the much needed step of blogging and talking about some of the many issues that have caused the company to lose a little luster. We'll never know, but wonder if it would have helped things before they had to launch into fire prevention damage control mode. Good friend, Marc Orchant points out that Dell has now blogged about the CRAPWARE issue and discusses some of the options that some customers now have to remove the bloat, as well as how they are dealing with some of the issues from a research standpoint.
Good steps. Some good listening. Good progress. Although I do find this statement intriguing:
However, our performance tests in the lab have not found significant improvements by removing software trials and other executables—most of our software sits quietly on the desktop until you launch it. The two culprits we have highlighted in our labs include the OS and security applications—both critical to using and maintaining the integrity of your PC.
Two points here. Kind of a straw man to blame the OS, unless Dell wants eveyrone to change operating systems. Hmmm? Second, one way to alleviate the bloat from necessary security software-change the vendors to those who don't write lousy code!
