We are about to enter my favorite part of the production process and also the scariest. This last week was spent taking apart and rebuilding scenes in an attempt to have the actors prepared for technical rehearsals, which in reality begin on Tuesday when we move into the theatre. As I said several times to the principals when we worked towards the end of the week, and touched each scene, this is last time I will be with you for a few days as my focus shifts to the larger picture of the entire production.
I come back to the actors at towards the end of the week after we have moved through the tech process and head into previews, and it is not like I'm entirely divorced from them, as I will give notes along the way. But now is the time for them to take their characters and scenes and run with them. Scary and exhilarating all at the same time.
Equally scary is tomorrow's rehearsal. After some work during the day, we run through the show for the first time. I'll be looking at each scene and each transition to see if the story works one scene into another. I'm relatively confident they do, but the joy is discovering that one moment or two in transition that allows me to further the story telling even more. Here's hoping there is a least one of those.
