TechDirt says they are clueless. I think they are reaching for straws. The MPAA is claiming that anti-piracy efforts helped shoot The Dark Knight to record grosses. Give me a break. Let’s try these alternative answers:
- The movie was actually quite good. Something Hollywood has trouble with lately.
- Reviews were uniformly raves.
- The hype, which included the “watch a train wreck fascination” over Heath Ledger’s death.
- Return business. In our tiny town there were at least 5 folks returning for a second viewing that I talked to in my portion of the line. Extrapolate that out.
I also love how the LA Times article talks about protecting a stinker of a film from bad word of mouth. Ahem.
