Chris Albrecht of GigaOm posts a warning that most who have been paying attention were already aware of. With the beginning of the Olympics just around the corner and streaming content sure to be a focus, and a hoped for catapult into the future for Silverlight and streaming media of big events in general, it appears NBC has posted a “notification:”
Since the NBC Olympics On the Go software delivers large video files, it may use a lot of bandwidth. This software is not recommended for people with dial-up or metered broadband Internet access..
What it doesn’t include is also obvious. Here’s an addendum:
Those using recently redefined “unlimited access” might also suffer a heart attack when they see their next bill if they use our service.
It is no mere coincidence that the broadband providers have been recently looking at ways to cash in on streaming media and experimenting with caps and metered access. They smell what’s coming and they want to grab their share. The NFL and NBC recently announced a streaming plan for 17 games this year. Did you see any mention of how much data needs to flow to stream a game? I didn’t.
