Apple is touting its iPhone as a games console, and yeah, you can play some games on it. Some are cute, some are clever, and there apparently is no shortage of folks wanting cute and clever. (OK, I’ll admit it, I’ve downloaded a few and find them great time wasters.) Is it a serious contender as a game console? In my opinion it is about as serious a game console contender as it is a hands-free smart phone. It has some of the elements but it ain’t there yet.
Keep cranking out the games and the PR about them, but I’d rather see Apple focus on putting a real Bluetooth stack into the device so that they could legitimately call it a Hands-Free device. Add voice dialing. Take a step beyond feature phone status. I don’t know about you but I find this Hands-Free tab in the Apple Store somewhat deceptive. Yeah, yeah, I know some state laws allow you to “dial manually” as long as you are talking over a headset or speaker phone, but give me a break.
Or maybe, Apple just wants to play games.
