Today marks the end of an era in Winchester and Frederick County. As I blogged weeks ago, Comcast is pulling the plug on the local Cable Access show, Cable Talk. It's a damn shame really. Cable Talk was a great resource for many of Comcast's customers in our area and one of the few outlets that groups like the Boy Scouts, local authors, charities, and even a celebrity or two got a chance to talk about what they were doing. With other local media continuing to shrink, the outlet will be missed. Stephanie Mangino has a good article about it in today's Winchester Star.
It will also be missed by us at Wayside Theatre. The host, Barry Lee, was always welcoming when we had a new show to promote, so I guess you an call me selfish here. But please don't view it in the same way that Comcast is being selfish. Intriguingly, when I blogged the original post and Twittered to Frank @comsastcares, I got a surprisingly corporate answer with no follow up to my follow up. That sort of makes @comcastcares not as valuable as a conduit for solving issues as I once thought it was (not that I expected them to solve this one, just that I expected more than a typical corporate stone wall.) Sort of makes those new Direct TV commercials featuring Cable execs seem less funny and more real.
So, farewell to Cable Talk. You made a huge impact on your audience and those you served. You will be missed.
Here's hoping the void Comcast created will be filled again some day.
