Talk about knowing where your bread is buttered and avoiding a controversy. US film distributors have so far passed on a new British film about Charles Darwin called Creation. Supposedly the film unfolds Darwin’s personal struggles with his own struggles between faith and reason.
The article cites a study that only 39% of Americans believe in the theory of evolution. But so far, US distributors want to avoid the controversy.Which I think might be a first, given that the film industry loves a good controversy to stir up some publicity. The subhead in the UK article says this:
A British film about Charles Darwin has failed to find a US distributor because his theory of evolution is too controversial for American audiences, according to its producer.
Of course I haven’t seen the film and know very little about it, but I have this sneaking suspicion that the film is one of those that might actually elevate the debate rather than intensify it. But then again, we can’t have that now, can we. And like I always say, if your faith can’t stand a little challenging now and then, then why do you call it faith?
